NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD
(Australia, R, 2008, 103 min)

Australian filmmakers in the 70’s and 80’s either pursued the high road to critical glory (Gallipoli, Picnic at Hanging Rock) or set their sights lower.  Much Lower.  And it’s here in the arena of lowbrow genre filmmaking that documentary filmmaker Mark Hartley has been digging thought the dirt.  Fed on a generous diet of nudity (both male and female) and violent action, this fast and furiously funny film charts the peaks and troughs of a wild story never told.   There are fascinating interviews, clips galore (showing breasts of all sizes and one penis of impressive proportions), harebrained stunts (when there are no safety precautions), splatter on a platter and a flashback to a time when if the script demanded it, real dope was smoked and real booze was drunk. Hartley gets it all: the action, danger, blood and lust that went into iconic Ozploitation cinema like Alvin Purple, Turkey Shoot, Stunt Rock, Patrick, The Man From Hong Kong, Howling III, Long Weekend, Dead End Drive-In, Road Games, Mad Max, BMX Bandits and many, many more! This tremendously entertaining film moves like gangbusters and packs a hell of a punch. It’s littered with anecdotes, juicy tidbits and opinions from a huge pool of pros - including Quentin Tarantino, Dennis Hopper, Barry Humphries, Jamie Lee Curtis, George Miller and a huge number of delegates from the Aussie film industry.  Watch as George Lazenby catches fire! Gasp as the stuntman nearly breaks his neck! Thrill to an exploding car that almost flattened a camera crew! Not Quite Hollywood is a jaw-dropping amalgamation of some of the Australian film industry’s kookiest achievements.  "I never thought that Australia needed culture," Barry Humphries says. "Culture after all is cheese."  He refers to the early Barry McKenzie films in which vomit took a life of its own ("Nauseating to think about," notes director Bruce Beresford). Nudity found new ground ("The eye piece fogged up regularly," says Oscar-winner John Seale). If you're a fan of genre films, don't miss this valuable work because it not only presents these films in context, it draws on the diversity of opinions which greeted them - many of which persist but many have been seasoned by time and perspective.

This is the find of the festival!
