Alfred Hitchcock’s
THE BIRDS

(US, PG-13, 1963, 119 min)

This is one of Hitchcock's most enigmatic and fascinating masterpieces, a true puzzle without an answer.  Spoiled socialite and notorious practical joker Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) is shopping in a San Francisco pet store when she meets Mitch Brenner.  Mitch is looking to buy a pair of lovebirds for his young sister's birthday; he recognizes Melanie but jokingly pretends to mistake her for an assistant.  Piqued, she decides on a whim to follow Mitch as he travels up the coast to his Bodega Bay hometown for the weekend.  But at the same time as she arrives in the town, gulls, crows, and every manner of species begin attacking humans for no good reason. Ultimately, a handful of survivors besiege themselves in a farmhouse against the terrifying onslaught.  Essentially employing thousands of trained birds, Hitchcock was able to create the illusion of them attacking the quiet community of Bodega Bay.  The result was a box-office smash and his last truly classic film.

Viewer’s Guide: Violence and suspense.
