ALL OVER THE GUY

Exclusive Screening
(US, NR, 2001, 96 min, 35mm)
Through a special arrangement with Lion's Gate Films, the NCGLFF is proud to present this single exclusive screening! A hilarious romantic comedy about two men who never agree but fall for each other because of their love of movies. And even then they don't agree! Tom and Eli meet on a blind date set up by their straight friends, but it quickly becomes obvious that they are a mismatched pair. Tom (Richard Ruccolo) is a gorgeous chain-smoking, heavy-drinking schoolteacher who shops at flea markets for vintage martini sets. Eli (Dan Bucatinsky, who also wrote the script) is a cute and nerdy romantic who watches marathon re-runs of The X-Files. They don't hit it off until they start talking about movies, but even then Tom can't believe that "any self-respecting gay man could possibly like In and Out." Christina Ricci, as Eli's sister, and Lisa Kudrow, as an apathetic, voiceover actor for an energy bar commercial, give marvelous cameo appearances. And Second City TV's Andrea Martin (remember Indira! Indira!) is Eli's mother, a touchy-feely psychiatrist who wants her son to communicate with her through a "Feel Wheel" and strongly advises him to take testicular self-exams. Directed by Julie Davis, All Over the Guy perfectly captures the humor, magic, and perils of gay men falling in love.

IRON LADIES

When April, May, and June (transvestite triplets) join the team, the fun really begins. Facing parental shame, homophobic violence, and public discrimination, this lovable crew struggles to become a cohesive unit. Based on the true story of a misfit team making it the Thai male national championships in 1996. The Iron Ladies breathes giddy new life into both the screwball comedy and the "against-all-odds" sports movie genres, but its most extraordinary feat is in painting a surprisingly out, celebratory portrait of gays in Thailand. ON THE BUS
(US, NR, 2001, 105 min, Video)
In mid-1998, The Digital Entertainment Network (DEN) hired director Lance Black to create reality show for Internet broadcasting about six gay men who travel cross-country on a bus. The show would be called On The Bus. A cast was assembled and then sent to the "Burning Man" festival in the desert near Reno, Nevada, to shoot its pilot episode. More than 60 hours of footage was shot. Later, when presented to the executives at DEN, the material was deemed "too gay" and sealed in a vault, never to be seen again. Two years later, DEN was shut down on charges of sexual misconduct, and Lance Black was awarded the footage he had worked so hard to capture. Black has edited the footage into a fascinating film about six strangers who gradually realize that they're only as sick as their secrets. There's Jimmy, the Swedish Olympic diver; Jason, the sensitive porn star; Billy, the sexy Jewish intellectual; Charles, the beautiful guy everyone wants and no one can have; Damon, the tortured musician who's not as pretty as the rest; and Lance, our reflective, little-seen narrator. Sporting a mobile home (à la Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), the boys travel in style—but all they can think about is sex. The simmering erotic tension finally bubbles over when the boys reach Burning Man, where rampant nudity, drugs, and artistic anarchy get added to the mix.

The rose-colored glasses of memory always idealize one person from the past, with whom everything could've been perfect--if it hadn't gone so horribly wrong. This film explores the second chance at love and friendship. Freshly single, Juliet has decided to take stock of her life and reorganize her priorities. At the top of her list is to see Julie again, her childhood friend who she hasn't spoken to in 15 years because of a misplaced kiss. Initially their relationship is strained, but they begin to reclaim their friendship, explore what went wrong, and try to make sense out of the chemistry and sexual tension boiling below the surface.

SCOUT'S HONOR
(US, NR, 2001, 58 min)
Winner: Best Documentary Audience Award and Freedom of Expression at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.
A powerful and timely documentary that traces the conflict between the anti-gay policies of the Boy Scouts of America and the broad-based movement by many of its members to overturn them. The compelling story is told largely through the experiences of 13-year-old Steven Cozza and 69-year-old David Rice--both heterosexual and dedicated to the Scouts, but even more determined to change the course of Scouting history. Along the way, they meet gay Scouts and Scoutmasters whose painful stories of expulsion earned national attention. A real-life tale of gay and straight people working to end anti-gay prejudice.

SEX BECOMES HER: The True Life Story of ChiChi LaRue
(UK, NR, 2000, 70 min, Video)
Chi Chi LaRue, the most famous drag-queen-cum-gay-porn director in the world, takes the audience on an all-access tour of the gay porn industry. LaRue, aka Larry Paciotti, is not afraid to reveal how she became the most successful director in contemporary gay adult filmmaking. This documentary probes the world of gay male porn, uncovering how young actors work long and hard to make the films that fans love. Interspersed between the sex, candid interviews with producers and directors and porn superstars (including Ken Ryker, Steve Rambo, and Cole Tucker) provide a comprehensive understanding of what makes Chi Chi so chi chi. LaRue is a true groundbreaker; she claims to be the first porn director to use drag queen actors and one of the first to demand safer sex on her sets when AIDS began ravaging the porn industry. To show that her life is more than just latex and lube, LaRue takes the filmmakers on a tour of her hometown, a sleepy Minnesota burg where her mother still lives.

STRAIGHT DOWN THE AISLE
(US, NR, 2000, 23min, Video)
Step into the straight-laced world of pink taffeta and heels as more than 30 lesbians recall their (not so pleasurable) experiences as bridesmaids at straight friends' weddings. From butch dykes who are asked to grow out their hair to bridesmaids who are still in love with the bride, Straight Down the Aisle: Confessions of Lesbian Bridesmaids takes a humorous and critical look at the constructs of heterosexual unions. Directors Christine J. Russo and Kelly Hankin skillfully weave personal testimonies from lesbians whose partners weren't invited to the ceremony or were asked to mask their relationships, alongside interviews with wedding industry experts who try to explain, no matter how vaguely, the appropriate role of the bridesmaid.

Frankie has always played sidekick to Nicola, so neither is prepared when two new arrivals, a young siren hired as a waitress, (Joele Carter from last year's Just One Time), and a drifter selling tie-dyes out of the back of his van (Jamie Harrold), begin to court only Frankie. Nicola's ensuing jealousy sets in motion a series of betrayals driving a wedge into their friendship and forcing Frankie to take a stand.

TABOO (GOHATO)
(Japan, R, 2001, 98 min, 35mm)
In nineteenth-century Japan, a ravishingly androgynous young recruit sparks lust among the ranks and leadership of the all-male Shogun militia, where homosexuality is much more accepted than we might imagine. The boy's youthful locks, seemingly at odds with his savage swordsmanship, quickly gain Kano (Ryuhei Matsuda) a long list of obsessive admirers and rival lovers, whose perpetual denials of homosexuality inevitability crumble with sharply observed wit. When jealousy leads to a string of savage murders, the entire Samurai order begins to fall apart. At first glance, the alluring Kano seems obedient, if detached, moving from bed to bed impassively, or beheading a condemned Samurai with savage dispatch. Yet, hidden behind his bangs is a glint of bloodlust, a love of his own disruptive power. Legendary Japanese director Nagashi Oshima has devoted his 40-year career to breaking taboos. His latest offering--the first-ever gay Samurai movie-- offers no concessions to Western audiences. This wholly Japanese film, hypnotically elegant in its period costumes and its moody electronic score, transports us to a world far from ours, yet one eerily familiar in its emotional terrain. In Japanese with English subtitles.
