A hilarious lesbian film that chronicles three weeks in the
life of a handsome, gender-bending, small town butch with
a nagging messiah complex. Emotionally defeated since the
death of her father, Shy heads to the big city to sink herself
into a "life of crime." Valentine, a deliriously
expressive, wiseacre adoptee on a misguided search for her
birthmother, quickly distracts her. The two freaky grifters
join forces and learn the true meaning of "poise under
pressure" in this visually stunning and wonderfully acted,
anti-authoritarian tale of friendship, trust and redemption.
A true tragic-comedy, By Hook or By Crook is like a female
version of Midnight Cowboy-hilarious, poignant and brave,
bringing grace and humor to its socially insightful subjects.
It is also the first of its kind: It's a movie about butches
by butches and gives voice to a powerful new creative sensibility.

CHOP SUEY

|
Just like its namesake, Chop Suey is a delicious mix of ingredients,
both amusing and flavorsome. Famed photographer and filmmaker
Bruce Weber (best known for his portrait of Chet Baker, Let's
Get Lost), introduces gorgeous teenage wrestling star, Peter
Johnson, to his personal universe. Whether recreating the
music and life of cabaret star Frances Faye, appreciating
the wily wit of Diana Vreeland, or considering his own world-class
collection of still photographs, Weber imparts a deeply felt
humanity. He is a man for whom love, loyalty, friendship,
humor and beauty-be it a superb torso or sensitive jaw-line,
a bounding, golden-haired retriever, or a pristine waterscape-is
all important. Chop Suey brilliantly encompasses Weber's myriad
passions and fantasies, his almost Peter Pan-like relationship
to those objects of desire the rest of us experience in the
glossy magazines or on towering billboards. "Astonishing,
ravishing...truly a landmark!" - Noah Cowan, Filmmaker

CIRCUIT
(US, NR, 2001, 120 min)
Viewer's Guide: Nudity, strong sexual content, language and
drug usage.
|
Dirk Shafer's (Man of the Year) hallucinatory new film revolves
around John, a hunky but closeted small-town cop, who is harassed
and attacked by his fellow officers when they find out he
is gay. In a disco heartbeat he moves to Los Angeles and in
with his filmmaker cousin Tad. At first resistant, he is soon
unable to escape the allure of beautiful men and chemical
enhancement, and gets ever more pumped up and strung out as
he joins the circuit tribe. His new buddy Hector, a strikingly
handsome high priced hustler in his late twenties, already
finds himself going over the hill of faded youth and fast-lane
partying. Bobby's viral load is undetectable, but high-class
sex shows and circuit appearances keep paying the bills. And
even as Tad makes his documentary exposing the underside of
the circuit scene, he himself is tweaking, going out, and
dating a new-age-aphorism-spouting DJ. Added to the mix are
the exploitative club owners, a scary straight couple played
by cult figures William Katt and Nancy Allen (Carrie, Dressed
to Kill), and John's innocent but loyal roommate Nina. With
its throbbing soundtrack, shirtless dancers and muscle-boy
sex scenes, Circuit may seem like it's one big high, but the
searing script, sharply drawn characters and visceral emotional
resonance create a sober and cautionary tale.

Atlanta based filmmaker Vismita Gupta-Smith tells the story
of an almost invisible minority, South Asian gays and lesbians.
Told from the perspective of a straight sister about her gay
brother, this film explores the prejudices faced by the gay
South Asian community (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal).
Interviews with other gay and lesbian South Asians expose
the deep-seated denial of homosexuality within this community
and the dismissal of the gay sexual orientation as a "western
vice". Through the film, Vismita points out the irony
of such dismissal, as she explains that one of this culture's
most treasured ancient texts, the Kama Sutra, actually celebrates
homosexuality.

From the writer of Edge of Seventeen comes this heart-warming
road drama for male and female audiences of all ages, for
gay and straight audiences, and for anyone who's ever been
a fan of 70's music. Gypsy (Sara Sue from TV's Popular) is
a brazen and outspoken girl in her early twenties who dreams
of becoming a singer, just like her icon: Stevie Nicks. Years
of fear and anger over her mother's abandonment have choked
Gypsy's voice and her confidence. She wants nothing more than
to leave her conservative hometown of Sandusky, Ohio and pursue
her dream. Clive is her best friend who's just now beginning
to experiment with his burgeoning sexuality. When Gypsy and
Clive learn about the annual "Night of 1,000 Stevies"
in New York City--a competition dedicated to obsessed fans
of the musical superstar--their dreams seem closer to fulfillment.
With Clive's encouragement, Gypsy overcomes her fear and vows
to be the best Stevie Nicks impersonator Gotham has ever seen.
The two pile into a '79 Trans Am and begin their journey,
hoping to find love and acceptance. Add Karen Black as a washed-up
lounge singer, an Amish runaway, a group of frat boys and
1,000 Stevie Nicks impersonators
and prepare yourself
for a great coming-of-age story. The film's killer soundtrack
features The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus and,
of course, Stevie Nicks karaoke.

Ke Kulana He Mahu: Remembering a Sense of Place is a documentary
that examines several aspects of the Honolulu gay scene; among
them are Hawaiian culture and history, the drag scene, HIV,
and religion. It is a story about surviving stereotypes, indignation,
homophobia, and marginalization in a land where the ancient
culture once accepted them as a part of society. Through the
richness of their personal stories and the humor of their
frequent jokes, we witness the solidarity and soul of a "minority"
who uses humor and togetherness to redefine family in order

Viewer's Guide: Language, nudity, sexual content and drug

|
Directed by North Carolina native Everett Lewis, Luster is
a wildly entertaining, gritty and romantic look at a queer
boy's adventures in lust, sex-and maybe even love! It's a
movie about things we thought mattered in 1997: the 'zine
scene, indie record stores, lesbians with guns, and poems
about David Cassidy's ass. Derek doesn't believe in first
sight-until he meets Jackson, a spunky poet who works at a
record store. Unfortunately, Derek isn't the only one smitten
with Jackson. His boss Sam is in love with Jackson, too. And
that's a problem, since Sam is straight! But Jackson isn't
interested in either of them, anyway. He has a crush on Billy,
a cute blonde he met at an orgy. But Billy loves musician
Sonny, who's in love with anyone who can help him overcome
his creative mental block! So until Jackson can win over Billy,
he'll make do with his hunky cousin Jed, who's visiting from
the country. But wait! Jed's being seduced by Jackson's close
lesbian friend! And this revelation isn't sitting pretty with
her girlfriend! Can anyone find real love amidst the chaos
of Los Angeles gay life?

Viewer's Guide: Language
|
Filmed live at Seattle's Paramount Theatre, Notorious captures
Margaret Cho's recent 37-city tour, which ended with a career
triumph at Carnegie Hall. A somber post-9/11 opening monologue
dedicated to rescue workers at Ground Zero veers off in a
typically irreverent direction that sets the tone for a stream
of fresh new material. Cho riffs on how the world would be
different if men had periods ("every bachelor apartment
would look like a murder scene") and details the ongoing
but so far unsuccessful quest to find her G-spot (an eye-opening
visit to a straight S&M sex club didn't help). We learn
what sort of woman turns her on ("a bull dyke who looks
like John Goodman"). She also regales us with stories
about her best friends from her high school days in San Francisco,
Alan and Jeremy, two teenage drag queens who taught her how
to be fabulous, funny and fierce. (She remembers them as "Crouching
Drag Queen, Hidden Faggot.") Cho summons up that fierceness
for her closing monologue, which takes a serious turn to confront
the trauma of growing up with an eating disorder in a world
where thinness is synonymous with beauty and self-worth.
