Marco Filiberti directs and stars in a smart and sexy debut feature that draws us effortlessly into the shutter-clicking, ego-stroking world of Riki Kandinsky, an Italian pornodivo (porn star) with a heart of gold and a 26-centimeter member (make that 10 inches, for the metrically challenged). A story within a story, Adored begins with two young filmmakers creating an homage to Kandinsky. Interviewing his older brother, Federico, we are transported 15 years in the past to Rome in 1999, where a death in the family reunites the two very different men. Federico is initially disgusted by Riki’s career choice, but eventually warms up to his brother’s latex-clad friends and even visits a porn film set. The plot thickens when Riki and Federico witness a woman’s death and meet her six-year-old son, Plapla. With the support of Federico and his wife, Riki attempts to become Plapla’s foster parent, but the Italian court is one arena where Riki’s magnetism might not win the day. In Italian with English subtitles. North Carolina premiere

The Bridge Game is the story of four women who, every week for the past year, have met on the bridge where a friend committed suicide. In her honor, these intriguing women vent their troubles before going off to a bridge game. At one gathering, tensions rise and emotions flare when one of the women climbs over the railing and attempts suicide. The conversation turns from trashy to intense. Directors Rhomie K. Thompson and David L. Lowe challenge viewers to consider the way people “play the game” and keep things light by “playing it cool.” Compelling performances and a powerful script take us on a journey of raw emotion, longing, and possibilities. This dark and evocative thriller is set against the backdrop of Europe in transition, where the East meets the West and where poverty clashes with affluence. Daniel, a single gay man in Madrid, is a successful lawyer who spends his time with a group of close friends and cruising the streets at night. Life takes a dramatic turn one evening after he meets Kyril, a handsome Bulgarian, who soon moves in. Spanish director Eloy de la Iglesia (El Diputado) has spent his life creating films that address class relations and social oppression. Bulgarian Lovers is a fascinating glimpse of the dangerous choices possible when passion overrules the senses. The stunning opening credits alone are as spellbinding as the movie itself—a film that takes us to the brink of a perilous and frightening precipice. Spanish with English subtitles. Cowboys & Angels is an engaging story of friendship and self-discovery that can best be described as "Queer Eye for the Irish Guy." Set in Limerick, the story follows a shy, nerdy civil servant named Shane (Michael Legge from Angela's Ashes), who is tenuously hanging on to his dream of becoming an artist. He shares his first apartment with Vincent, an ultra-hip gay fashion design student, who takes Shane under his wing. Shane meets and falls for Vincent's best friend Gemma and decides to let Vincent give him a makeover. When neighbors offer Shane a chance to use his looks to make some fast cash, he sees an opportunity to pursue his dream and afford a new wardrobe. Ultimately, the makeover is more than skin deep and what follows is an often painful journey; but throughout this heartfelt and assured film, the relationship developing between Shane and Vincent serves as the emotional core, drawing a rich portrait of two people whose mutual support and closeness transcends simple friendship. The majority of nations entered the 21st century with horrific laws that keep gay and lesbian citizens locked away in their closets, and, at times, prison. In some countries, “getting caught” can even incur the death penalty. This documentary uncovers the struggle of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people seeking basic human rights in the face of severe oppression. Few people in the West knew about this historic social upheaval until 52 men in Cairo were arrested on the Queen Boat discothèque. Dangerous Living opens with Ashraf Zanati, one of the Cairo 52 defendants, who was tortured, humiliated, beaten and forced to spend 13 months in prison. His simple, but powerful statement sets out the basic theme of the struggle: “My sexuality is my own sexuality. It doesn’t belong to anybody. Not to my government, not to my brother, my sister, my family. No.” North Carolina premiere

Fast-paced, quick-witted and thoroughly engaging, Goldfish Memory catches you off-guard while playfully running through the paces of that rarest of breeds: an enjoyable and hilarious romantic comedy. The plot, with a labyrinth of mostly queer romances, is cute and sexy; filled with the true-to-life foibles of dating that cross all cultural boundaries. Angie is explaining the incestuous lesbian nature of her soon-to-arrive dinner guests to Red, her hunky gay pal. First, Felicity and Sophie have just split up but are still friends. Felicity is bringing her new girlfriend, Sinead, who was once Sophie’s girlfriend. Emeron, who is still breaking up with Jin, used to be Felicity’s lover years and years ago. In fact, the only non-ex is Sinead’s friend, Kit, who used to be Angie’s ex’s ex. To which Red responds, “Of course, now you have to sleep with Kit and complete the circle!” North Carolina premiere

France’s most privileged and powerful families send their children to elite schools like the titular one in Robert Salis’ extraordinary sensual film. Students Paul, Bernard and Louis-Arnault find themselves enmeshed in emotional and sexual power games. Desires shift among the strikingly attractive young men, various girlfriends, and, most significantly, between Paul and a lower-class male North African worker. Demonstrating an intentional theatricality that acknowledges its stage origins, Grande École has earned apt comparison to the early work of Fassbinder. This is a provocative tale of the intersections of power, sexuality, class and race in relationships. In French with English subtitles.
