Inspired by real events, Amnesia - The James Brighton Enigma tells the story of an American found naked and amnesiac in a vacant parking lot in Montreal in 1998. He says his name is James Brighton, but the only thing he's sure of is that he's gay. Volunteers from S.O.S Gay organize a media campaign to help him recover his forgotten past. But after three months, no one has claimed him, and James starts to despair. Until the Montreal Police arrest him after his brother, a Pentecostal minister in Tennessee recognized him on TV.  What happened to this young American in search of freedom?  That's what Sylvie, a criminology student, tries to find out a year later, as her fascination with the case brings her to question her own identity.

Red Doors tells the story of the Wongs, a bizarrely dysfunctional Chinese-American family living in the New York suburbs. Ed Wong (Tzi Ma) has just retired and plots to escape his mundane life. However, the tumultuous, madcap lives of his three rebellious daughters change his plans. Samantha (Jacqueline Kim), the eldest daughter, is a tough New York businesswoman engaged to a prominent young man (Jayce Bartok). Festering beneath her controlled surface, however, is a deep-rooted resentment for being pushed onto the straight and narrow path. As she nears her thirtieth birthday, Samantha begins to reevaluate her career and love life. When she runs into an old high school flame (Rossif Sutherland) during a visit to her hometown, Samantha is thrust into a soul-searching journey that compels her to reexamine how she has lived her life until now.   Julie (Elaine Kao), the shy middle sister, is a fourth-year medical student whose only social outlet is her weekly ballroom dance class. Julie has always been the quiet center of the Wong family storm. However, Julie's world is turned upside down when she meets Mia Scarlett (Mia Riverton), a movie star researching her next role at the hospital, who sets Julie's heart aflame. While Julie grapples with the difficulties of dating a celebrity, she also tries to keep her own family from falling apart.   Katie (Kathy Shao-Lin Lee), the youngest sister, is a disaffected high school senior who engages in an elaborate prank war with Simon (Sebastian Stan), her longtime neighbor and nemesis. While the pranks start out innocuously, the incidents rapidly escalate to dangerous proportions until the two finally discover their own peculiar brand of emotional connection.   Before Ed disappears, he decides to re-visit his history through old VHS footage of the Wong family (the director's own home video footage). The stark contrast between the happier past and the colder reality of the present compel Ed to leave home. Yet, while the Wongs may no longer be able to verbally express their feelings, Ed and the daughters learn to communicate again through the stories and images from the past.

BOY CULTURE

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!   London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 88 min, 2006) Beta

In 2005, Q. Allan Brocka's much-enjoyed Eating Out premiered at the NCGLFF as our centerpiece screening.  Boy Culture is a great follow up: a sexy, funny and sharply written gay comedy of manners. Brocka introduces us to a feasible yet fantastic gay family set-up: 'X' is an older (well he's in his 30s) 'hooker with morals' in need of a dose of intimacy. He is secretly obsessed with his flat mate Andrew, who is starting to experiment on the scene. And then there's Joey, their young sexually voracious twink 'son' who completes this intriguing threesome. When 'X' meets an enigmatic older trick who wants him to feel the time is right before they have sex, he begins to drop his guard. And as he does, all their relationships spin out into intricate, hilarious and complex patterns. This is gay life as it is so often stereotyped, but cut through with real heart, intelligence and emotional integrity. Boy Culture turns you on, makes you think about your own relationships and leaves you with a smile on your face.

LOVING ANNABELLE

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   Miami Gay Lesbian Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 77 min, 2006) Beta

Continuing the long legacy of lesbian schoolgirl films like Mädchen in Uniform and The Children's Hour comes a new film worthy of induction into the ranks of those classics. Loving Annabelle is a sultry, sexy and supremely smart film about a boarding school student who finally meets her match...or does she?  The wild daughter of a senator, Annabelle (Erin Kelly) comes to a very strict Catholic boarding school as the last stop in a run of exclusive private schools that have expelled her. Intelligent, beautiful and bored, Annabelle immediately impresses both her schoolmates and her new teacher, Simone (Diane Gaidry), when she correctly interprets the heavily sexual meaning of an e.e. cummings poem in English class. Brazen enough to openly proposition Simone after class, Annabelle doesn't quite know what she's in for as she begins her very Lolita-esque temptation. Matters are further complicated by the fact that Simone is the dormitory monitor and thus lives on the same floor as the aggressive and sexy Annabelle. When student and teacher are the only two left on campus during spring break, the temptation is nearly overwhelming.  What do they do? To find out, you'll have to see the movie! With its completely captivating leads, Loving Annabelle keeps us in suspense until an ending you might not see coming.
