But after three months, no one has claimed him, and James starts to despair. Until the Montreal Police arrest him after his brother, a Pentecostal minister in Tennessee recognized him on TV.  What happened to this young American in search of freedom?  That's what Sylvie, a criminology student, tries to find out a year later, as her fascination with the case brings her to question her own identity.

BOY CULTURE

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 88 min, 2006) Beta

In 2005, Q. Allan Brocka's much-enjoyed Eating Out premiered at the NCGLFF as our centerpiece screening.  Boy Culture is a great follow up: a sexy, funny and sharply written gay comedy of manners. Brocka introduces us to a feasible yet fantastic gay family set-up: 'X' is an older (well he's in his 30s) 'hooker with morals' in need of a dose of intimacy. He is secretly obsessed with his flat mate Andrew, who is starting to experiment on the scene. And then there's Joey, their young sexually voracious twink 'son' who completes this intriguing threesome. When 'X' meets an enigmatic older trick who wants him to feel the time is right before they have sex, he begins to drop his guard. And as he does, all their relationships spin out into intricate, hilarious and complex patterns. This is gay life as it is so often stereotyped, but cut through with real heart, intelligence and emotional integrity. Boy Culture turns you on, makes you think about your own relationships and leaves you with a smile on your face.

She is determined to prove to her son that she loves him no matter what. Nothing Todd says or does can convince her that he's actually straight! Soon, everyone in his life believes he is gay, despite his increasingly vehement denials. In a small town in 1967, plucky young sissy Phillip (Garrison) is about to celebrate his birthday at the beach cottage owned by his best friend Stan (Deo).  All of Phillip's friends are gathered for the festivities, including Stan's hunky-but-impulsive boyfriend Billy (Kovar), Billy's shy, nerdy cousin Joseph (Mosher), and Randall, the chain-smoking, bitter queen of the bunch (Clarke).  Meanwhile, a horde of libidinous gay men - turned into ravenous flesh-eating zombies by toxic mosquitoes at a cruisy highway rest stop - are making their way towards our oblivious celebrants, eating every man in their path.  With body parts washing up on shore and party guests disappearing, our heroes must find a way to stop the zombie onslaught.  Will Stan keep the rotting corpses out of his spotless home?  Will Joseph work up the courage to declare his love for Phillip?  Can Billy keep it in his pants long enough to stay alive?  And is Phillip's cheating boyfriend coming to the party to save them, or to eat them?  No one is safe in this campy mix of classic B horror flicks and pre-Stonewall gay melodramas.

LESBIAN GRANDMOTHERS FROM MARS

OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
(US, NR, 73 min, 2005) DVD

It's an out-of-this-world documentary about a down-to-earth lesbian couple who gets on their bicycles and ride 3,800 miles across America to rally support for same-sex marriage. From San Francisco to Cawker City, Kansas to New York City, these inspiring grandmothers are far from the rocking chair and are tired of waiting for marriage equality to come to them.  Tired of all the regressive hate-mongering and motivated by the threat of a federal anti-marriage amendment, Carrie & Elisia set out to prove that they are not alien life forms who wreak havoc on society and destroy "traditional families."   Using their own family as an example, they meet face-to-face with politicians and regular folks living in the heartland to show that their life is not so different from the lives of other American families.

LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP

OFFICIAL SELECTION! NewFest 2006: The 18th New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Film Festival
(US, NR, 97 min, 2006) DVD

A classic romantic comedy with appeal to both gay and straight audiences, Long-Term Relationship celebrates the power of true love. Out of all the gay men in Los Angeles (and sadly, he's tested out more than a few), Glenn (Matthew Montgomery) has finally found his soul mate -- a cute Southern boy named Adam (Windham Beacham). Their relationship started, as so many great relationships have, with the personal ads ("GWM seeks LTR"). From the moment they met, it was instant attraction. Now Glenn's in love for the first time, and it feels great.  There's only one problem. Well, actually a few problems. But are they big enough to be deal-breakers, or can Glenn and Adam work through their differences? Glenn's straight friends encourage him to stick it out and make it work -- after all, everyone's happier as part of a couple, right? Meanwhile, his gay friends tell him to move on and find someone they can all like. Ultimately, only Glenn and Adam can decide what it takes to sustain a long-term relationship.

LOVE LIFE

OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 72 min, 2006) DVD

Crisply told and packing an emotional punch, Damion Dietz's (Beverly Kills) latest film tells the story of a couple in an unhappy marriage of convenience. In an attempt to meet expectations and retain financial security, Joe Hahn (a closeted former pro baseball player) and Mary Hahn (his sexually secretive wife) mimic the conventions of a traditional heterosexual marriage, and find themselves suffocated by the strained, empty charade. But when Joe develops an emotional connection with a young man from his past, and when a beautiful friend from Mary's college years resurfaces with her own agenda, the marriage of convenience begins to crack, revealing the truth, hope and strength buried within all of them. With equal time given to both the male/male and female/female relationships, Love Life is a most unusual and captivating film. What's next for this not-so-happy queerly married couple?

LOVER OTHER

OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival

The newest film by Barbara Hammer, Lover Other is the story of the 1920's Surrealist artists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. Lesbians and half-sisters, the gender-bending artists lived and worked together all their lives.  Heroic resisters to the Nazis occupying Jersey Isle during WW II, they were captured and sentenced to death.  Award winning filmmaker Barbara Hammer infuses this film with vigor using photographs, archival footage, dramatic interludes of a "found Cahun script" and unique interviews of Jersey Isle residents who knew the two women.

LOVING ANNABELLE

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   Miami Gay Lesbian Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 77 min, 2006) Beta

Continuing the long legacy of lesbian schoolgirl films like Mädchen in Uniform and The Children's Hour comes a new film worthy of induction into the ranks of those classics. Loving Annabelle is a sultry, sexy and supremely smart film about a boarding school student who finally meets her match...or does she?  The wild daughter of a senator, Annabelle (Erin Kelly) comes to a very strict Catholic boarding school as the last stop in a run of exclusive private schools that have expelled her. Intelligent, beautiful and bored, Annabelle immediately impresses both her schoolmates and her new teacher, Simone (Diane Gaidry), when she correctly interprets the heavily sexual meaning of an e.e. cummings poem in English class. Brazen enough to openly proposition Simone after class, Annabelle doesn't quite know what she's in for as she begins her very Lolita-esque temptation. Matters are further complicated by the fact that Simone is the dormitory monitor and thus lives on the same floor as the aggressive and sexy Annabelle. When student and teacher are the only two left on campus during spring break, the temptation is nearly overwhelming.  What do they do? To find out, you'll have to see the movie! With its completely captivating leads, Loving Annabelle keeps us in suspense until an ending you might not see coming.

Special Screening with Tab Hunter in Appearance!

LUST IN THE DUST
hosted by TAB HUNTER

(US, R, 1985, 84 min) 35mm

He Rode The West... The Girls Rode The Rest! Together They Ravaged The Land!
After forming a match made in trash-movie heaven in John Waters' Polyester, Tab Hunter and Divine reunited for this deliciously tasteless Western comedy, which borrows its title from the nickname for Duel in the Sun, the turgid Western that inspired director Paul Bartel's affectionate spoofery. With Hunter wearing two hats as hero and co-producer, the movie indulges its own outrageous excess while staying true to the dustiest traditions of the Western genre. It's just good enough to watch without shame, and rude enough to hide from more easily offended members of the family. Nothing's sacred in Chile Verde, the wild western town where lone gunman Abel Wood (Hunter) arrives after rescuing corpulent saloon singer Rosie Velez (Divine) from being defiled by Hard Case Williams (Geoffey Lewis) and his gang of misfit gunslingers. Saloon owner Marguerita Ventura (Lainie Kazan) gets hot 'n' heavy for Abel's wood, and passions flare up in a race for hidden treasure, the map to which is tattooed in two sections on Rosie's and Marguerita's ample posteriors. To reveal more would spoil the wretched hilarity; one needn't love Westerns to enjoy this pig-wallow of a comedy, but it helps if you know the legacy of screen villains like Henry Silva, whose riotous here while barely shifting his vile expression. No doubt, this is the wackiest Western that ever cooked under the "blistering, burning, blazing, scorching, roasting, toasting, baking, boiling, broiling, steaming, searing, sizzling, grilling, smoldering, very hot New Mexico sun."
