Red Doors tells the story of the Wongs, a bizarrely dysfunctional Chinese-American family living in the New York suburbs. Ed Wong (Tzi Ma) has just retired and plots to escape his mundane life. However, the tumultuous, madcap lives of his three rebellious daughters change his plans. Samantha (Jacqueline Kim), the eldest daughter, is a tough New York businesswoman engaged to a prominent young man (Jayce Bartok). Festering beneath her controlled surface, however, is a deep-rooted resentment for being pushed onto the straight and narrow path. As she nears her thirtieth birthday, Samantha begins to reevaluate her career and love life. When she runs into an old high school flame (Rossif Sutherland) during a visit to her hometown, Samantha is thrust into a soul-searching journey that compels her to reexamine how she has lived her life until now.   Julie (Elaine Kao), the shy middle sister, is a fourth-year medical student whose only social outlet is her weekly ballroom dance class. Julie has always been the quiet center of the Wong family storm. However, Julie's world is turned upside down when she meets Mia Scarlett (Mia Riverton), a movie star researching her next role at the hospital, who sets Julie's heart aflame. While Julie grapples with the difficulties of dating a celebrity, she also tries to keep her own family from falling apart.   Katie (Kathy Shao-Lin Lee), the youngest sister, is a disaffected high school senior who engages in an elaborate prank war with Simon (Sebastian Stan), her longtime neighbor and nemesis. While the pranks start out innocuously, the incidents rapidly escalate to dangerous proportions until the two finally discover their own peculiar brand of emotional connection.   Before Ed disappears, he decides to re-visit his history through old VHS footage of the Wong family (the director's own home video footage). The stark contrast between the happier past and the colder reality of the present compel Ed to leave home. Yet, while the Wongs may no longer be able to verbally express their feelings, Ed and the daughters learn to communicate again through the stories and images from the past.

Marina has a long-cherished project, a play she is writing based on the letters of French Enlightenment figure, Madame de Sévigné. Will she quit her TV job to finish it? SMALL TOWN GAY BAR

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   Miami Gay Lesbian Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 81 min, 2006) Beta

Small town gay bar is a tribute to the resiliency of gays living in rural areas throughout America. A moving portrait of men and women fighting to create and maintain community for themselves in the face of great opposition, hypocrisy and prejudice in a largely ignored subculture of discreet backdoor entrances and hushed sexual expression in small town Mississippi.  Deep in the heart of the Bible Belt, attacked on all sides by the Christian Coalition, several spirited bar owners have created an oasis for gays to call home. Rumors in Shannon, Mississippi (population 1,657) and Different Seasons in Meridien, Mississippi (population 39,968) have both survived decades of torment and persecution from authorities and citizens.  Despite overwhelming odds against their survival, the rural gay community has become even more empowered from hatred following devastating attacks including vandalism, organized protests and the recent brutal murder of 18 year-old Scotty Weaver who was tortured and mutilated in a neighboring state by three assailants, simply because of his sexual orientation.  The characters that populate these low profile bars are a colorful and loving bunch, grateful to have a place where they can be themselves. Jim Bishop (aka Alicia Stone) is the glamorous show director at Rumors by night and a veterinarian receptionist by day. His partner Geoff is the DJ at the club. Lori and her lover Ruby purchased the dilapidated and abandoned Crossroads Bar and converted it into the popular bar Different Seasons. Their dedication and creative spirit have helped the club survive as the only gay destination for the local population.  The fight for equal rights is far from over, but at these small town gay bars, a "family" has been created for a hardy group of strangers who have quickly become life long friends. While urban life has made strong advances in the hard fought journey from the underground to primetime, these small pockets of community throughout America continue to struggle for basic rights of life and love.

TRANSPARENT

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival
(US, NR, 61 min, 2005) DVD

With the documentary TransParent, Jules Rosskam presents us with 19 remarkable people: all female-to-male transgenders, all mothers. As one interviewee puts it, "I'm not the only one who transitions. Everybody around me has to transition." That includes one's children and one's parents. These men tell us about how they came to the decision to become men, their mixed emotions about mothering (as opposed to parenting), custody issues, talking to their own parents about FTM issues, pregnancy, reconnection with now-grown children, helping kids combat prejudice, gender roles in parenting and, yes, the perennial question: What does your child call you? One parent even talks about his transitioning teenager and "typical parent-child communication problems." Interspersed with the interview is home movie and video footage of the mothers and their babies. No matter where one stands on transgender issues, TransParent is a compelling look at remarkable individuals who refused to give up motherhood when they gave up their original genders.

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   Breckenridge Film Festival
(US, NR, 76 min, 2006) Beta

Mrs. Victoria and Francis Gaylord are about to celebrate their 10th anniversary with their so-called closest friends when suddenly, Victoria falls unconscious.  The party is cut short and Victoria's personal physician, Dr. Bender is called to intervene.  He tells her she needs to go to the hospital. Victoria is stubborn and believes Francis and others are only in her life to get her money. In the meantime, Cynthia and Phillip, Victoria's adopted daughter and son-in-law, are on their way to the party when they hear about their mother's illness.  Cynthia wants to rekindle her failing relationship with her mother. Phillip is skeptical about going because he is afraid of Nicholas, Francis' "real" son.  Nicholas has always wanted to get into Phillip's pants and claims Phillip is a closeted gay man. Cynthia is aware of Nicholas' sexual feelings for Phillip.  This fuels her secret affair with Mark, Victoria and Francis' adopted son. Nicholas soon confronts Mark about his suspicious relationship with Cynthia. Soon a competition begins between Kristin and Billy as they push each other's buttons while trying to get Andrew into bed. Eric arrives to pick up Andrew for their date but when Kristin and Billy intervene, the threesome begins to look for Andrew around the estate. Soon their game is over when Andrew is caught making love with French boy, Josh.  Billy is not amused when the others begin to treat Andrew as an opportunity to get to Victoria's money.  When Billy confronts them he is soon ostracized. Dr. Bender secretly plans to use Victoria's helpless position to further his own career in the medical field.  Francis truly wants what's best for Victoria.  Nurse Jones seems to be the only innocent one in the entire party but we will soon find out that she has a deeply, troubled past with Victoria. Nurse Jones is only here for one reason... SWEET, SWEET, REVENGE!
