Inspired by real events, Amnesia - The James Brighton Enigma tells the story of an American found naked and amnesiac in a vacant parking lot in Montreal in 1998. He says his name is James Brighton, but the only thing he's sure of is that he's gay. Volunteers from S.O.S Gay organize a media campaign to help him recover his forgotten past. But after three months, no one has claimed him, and James starts to despair. Until the Montreal Police arrest him after his brother, a Pentecostal minister in Tennessee recognized him on TV.  What happened to this young American in search of freedom?  That's what Sylvie, a criminology student, tries to find out a year later, as her fascination with the case brings her to question her own identity.

BOY CULTURE

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!   London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 88 min, 2006) Beta

In 2005, Q. Allan Brocka's much-enjoyed Eating Out premiered at the NCGLFF as our centerpiece screening.  Boy Culture is a great follow up: a sexy, funny and sharply written gay comedy of manners. Brocka introduces us to a feasible yet fantastic gay family set-up: 'X' is an older (well he's in his 30s) 'hooker with morals' in need of a dose of intimacy. He is secretly obsessed with his flat mate Andrew, who is starting to experiment on the scene. And then there's Joey, their young sexually voracious twink 'son' who completes this intriguing threesome. When 'X' meets an enigmatic older trick who wants him to feel the time is right before they have sex, he begins to drop his guard. And as he does, all their relationships spin out into intricate, hilarious and complex patterns. This is gay life as it is so often stereotyped, but cut through with real heart, intelligence and emotional integrity. Boy Culture turns you on, makes you think about your own relationships and leaves you with a smile on your face.

Todd (straight) ends up on a blind date with a gay man, Kelly - the result of a practical joke played by his brother, Barry. To Todd's surprise, he and Kelly strike up a friendship. They decide to take revenge on Barry by reversing the joke. After their "date," the pair saunters past Barry holding hands. The joke works too well. Freaking out and convinced that Todd is gay, Barry calls their mother to break the news. Concerned, she arrives on the next plane. Despite his vehement denials, Mom now sees Todd's love of movies, and theatre, as well as his lack of interest in sports, as clear signs she'd previously missed. She is determined to prove to her son that she loves him no matter what. Nothing Todd says or does can convince her that he's actually straight! Soon, everyone in his life believes he is gay, despite his increasingly vehement denials. After an attempt to prove his heterosexuality with a sexy younger woman ends in disaster, he starts to wonder, could his feelings for Kelly be more then he'd ever suspect?

CREATURES FROM THE PINK LAGOON

OFFICIAL SELECTION! Philadelphia Int'l Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
(US, NR, 2006, 71 min) DVD

In a small town in 1967, plucky young sissy Phillip (Garrison) is about to celebrate his birthday at the beach cottage owned by his best friend Stan (Deo).  All of Phillip's friends are gathered for the festivities, including Stan's hunky-but-impulsive boyfriend Billy (Kovar), Billy's shy, nerdy cousin Joseph (Mosher), and Randall, the chain-smoking, bitter queen of the bunch (Clarke).  Meanwhile, a horde of libidinous gay men - turned into ravenous flesh-eating zombies by toxic mosquitoes at a cruisy highway rest stop - are making their way towards our oblivious celebrants, eating every man in their path.  With body parts washing up on shore and party guests disappearing, our heroes must find a way to stop the zombie onslaught.  Will Stan keep the rotting corpses out of his spotless home?  Will Joseph work up the courage to declare his love for Phillip?  Can Billy keep it in his pants long enough to stay alive?  And is Phillip's cheating boyfriend coming to the party to save them, or to eat them?  No one is safe in this campy mix of classic B horror flicks and pre-Stonewall gay melodramas.

LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP

OFFICIAL SELECTION! NewFest 2006: The 18th New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Film Festival
(US, NR, 97 min, 2006) DVD

A classic romantic comedy with appeal to both gay and straight audiences, Long-Term Relationship celebrates the power of true love. Out of all the gay men in Los Angeles (and sadly, he's tested out more than a few), Glenn (Matthew Montgomery) has finally found his soul mate -- a cute Southern boy named Adam (Windham Beacham). Their relationship started, as so many great relationships have, with the personal ads ("GWM seeks LTR"). From the moment they met, it was instant attraction. Now Glenn's in love for the first time, and it feels great.  There's only one problem. Well, actually a few problems. But are they big enough to be deal-breakers, or can Glenn and Adam work through their differences? Glenn's straight friends encourage him to stick it out and make it work -- after all, everyone's happier as part of a couple, right? Meanwhile, his gay friends tell him to move on and find someone they can all like. Ultimately, only Glenn and Adam can decide what it takes to sustain a long-term relationship.

LOVE LIFE

OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 72 min, 2006) DVD

Crisply told and packing an emotional punch, Damion Dietz's (Beverly Kills) latest film tells the story of a couple in an unhappy marriage of convenience. In an attempt to meet expectations and retain financial security, Joe Hahn (a closeted former pro baseball player) and Mary Hahn (his sexually secretive wife) mimic the conventions of a traditional heterosexual marriage, and find themselves suffocated by the strained, empty charade. But when Joe develops an emotional connection with a young man from his past, and when a beautiful friend from Mary's college years resurfaces with her own agenda, the marriage of convenience begins to crack, revealing the truth, hope and strength buried within all of them. With equal time given to both the male/male and female/female relationships, Love Life is a most unusual and captivating film. What's next for this not-so-happy queerly married couple?

SMALL TOWN GAY BAR

OFFICIAL SELECTION!   Miami Gay Lesbian Film Festival
OFFICIAL SELECTION!  Frameline -  San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival
(US, NR, 81 min, 2006) Beta

Small town gay bar is a tribute to the resiliency of gays living in rural areas throughout America. A moving portrait of men and women fighting to create and maintain community for themselves in the face of great opposition, hypocrisy and prejudice in a largely ignored subculture of discreet backdoor entrances and hushed sexual expression in small town Mississippi.  Deep in the heart of the Bible Belt, attacked on all sides by the Christian Coalition, several spirited bar owners have created an oasis for gays to call home. Rumors in Shannon, Mississippi (population 1,657) and Different Seasons in Meridien, Mississippi (population 39,968) have both survived decades of torment and persecution from authorities and citizens.  Despite overwhelming odds against their survival, the rural gay community has become even more empowered from hatred following devastating attacks including vandalism, organized protests and the recent brutal murder of 18 year-old Scotty Weaver who was tortured and mutilated in a neighboring state by three assailants, simply because of his sexual orientation.  The characters that populate these low profile bars are a colorful and loving bunch, grateful to have a place where they can be themselves. Jim Bishop (aka Alicia Stone) is the glamorous show director at Rumors by night and a veterinarian receptionist by day. His partner Geoff is the DJ at the club. Lori and her lover Ruby purchased the dilapidated and abandoned Crossroads Bar and converted it into the popular bar Different Seasons. Their dedication and creative spirit have helped the club survive as the only gay destination for the local population.  The fight for equal rights is far from over, but at these small town gay bars, a "family" has been created for a hardy group of strangers who have quickly become life long friends. While urban life has made strong advances in the hard fought journey from the underground to primetime, these small pockets of community throughout America continue to struggle for basic rights of life and love.

In the meantime, Cynthia and Phillip, Victoria's adopted daughter and son-in-law, are on their way to the party when they hear about their mother's illness.  Cynthia wants to rekindle her failing relationship with her mother. Phillip is skeptical about going because he is afraid of Nicholas, Francis' "real" son.  Nicholas has always wanted to get into Phillip's pants and claims Phillip is a closeted gay man. Cynthia is aware of Nicholas' sexual feelings for Phillip.  This fuels her secret affair with Mark, Victoria and Francis' adopted son. Nicholas soon confronts Mark about his suspicious relationship with Cynthia. Soon a competition begins between Kristin and Billy as they push each other's buttons while trying to get Andrew into bed. Eric arrives to pick up Andrew for their date but when Kristin and Billy intervene, the threesome begins to look for Andrew around the estate. Soon their game is over when Andrew is caught making love with French boy, Josh.  Billy is not amused when the others begin to treat Andrew as an opportunity to get to Victoria's money.  When Billy confronts them he is soon ostracized. Dr. Bender secretly plans to use Victoria's helpless position to further his own career in the medical field.  Francis truly wants what's best for Victoria.  Nurse Jones seems to be the only innocent one in the entire party but we will soon find out that she has a deeply, troubled past with Victoria.
