MOM’S APPLE PIE

North Carolina Premiere!
(US, NR, 60 min, 2006)

While the beginning of the LGBT Civil Rights movement was gaining momentum, the 1970s witnessed horrific custody battles for lesbian mothers. This documentary revisits the early tumultuous years of the lesbian custody movement through the stories of five lesbian mothers and their four children. Duncan Roy’s modern re-imagining of Oscar Wilde’s seminal tale of youth’s ephemeral curse is beautiful to look at – and that’s not just because of Dorian Gray (David Gallagher). Dorian is an independently wealthy young man who hangs out with the movers and shakers of Manhattan's art scene. He's madly in love with the struggling actress Sibyl, yet gives into the attentions of lovelorn artist Basil. The result is Basil's magnetic video installation piece that captures Dorian's ageing soul, helped by the Mephistophelean Gabriel. Over the next 17 years, Dorian is shepherded through his decadent life by his friend and patron Henry. But there's a terrible price to pay for eternal youth.

A wry comedy feature about one of life's biggest decision.. Sasha, a cartoonist, wishes that she could get pregnant by mistake with her girlfriend, Maya. Having to be so rational about it is putting her off. Presuming that straight people have it easier, she creates two heterosexual scenarios in order to further investigate procreation.
