MOM’S APPLE PIE
North Carolina Premiere!
(US, NR, 60 min, 2006)
While the beginning of
the LGBT Civil Rights movement was gaining
momentum, the 1970s witnessed horrific custody battles for lesbian
mothers. This documentary revisits the early tumultuous years of the
lesbian custody movement through the stories of five lesbian mothers
and their four children. Narrated by Kate Clinton, the documentary
interviews the sons and daughters who were separated from their
mothers, the mothers themselves, and one woman who made the difficult
decision to flee with her children.

Nina Shah's
return to her native Scotland is not a joyous homecoming.
Gone for three years after running out on her wedding, she returns to
Glasgow for her dad's funeral and is forced to face all the memories
and people she left behind, including best friend Bobbi, an aspiring
Bollywood Drag Queen. Nina is taken aback when she discovers that half
of the family's Indian restaurant was lost due to old gambling debts,
and when she discovers that the new co-owner is a family friend, Lisa,
things get more complicated. Soon the aroma in the kitchen is full of
the scents of ginger, coconut, coriander and cumin, but Nina's heart
and mind are flled with thoughts of Lisa. Afraid to let her family know
where her heart really lies, it's the discovery that she is not the
only Shah with a secret that helps her understand that life is like the
rule for making a great curry.

An
Irish-Catholic family learns that the youngest son is gay.
Self-accepting Bobby Riley, a Chicago architect, tells us right off the
bat he's gay. He has three militantly straight brothers, and only his
sister knows the truth. Now that both their parents are dead, his
sister pressures Bobby to tell his brothers. Bobby and his live-in
boyfriend would like nothing more than to drop the charade Bobby
maintains with his lesbian pal. But when Bobby does spill the beans,
his brothers assume due to his regular-guy demeanor that he's kidding.
Besides, they're meat and potatoes Irish-Catholic, so Bobby simply
can't be gay. But, everybody, it turns out, has a secret.

Duncan Roy’s modern re-imagining of Oscar Wilde’s
seminal
tale of youth’s ephemeral curse is beautiful to look at
–
and that’s not just because of Dorian Gray (David Gallagher).
Dorian is an independently wealthy young man who hangs out with the
movers and shakers of Manhattan's art scene. He's madly in love with
the struggling actress Sibyl, yet gives into the attentions of lovelorn
artist Basil. The result is Basil's magnetic video installation piece
that captures Dorian's ageing soul, helped by the Mephistophelean
Gabriel. Over the next 17 years, Dorian is shepherded through his
decadent life by his friend and patron Henry. But there's a terrible
price to pay for eternal youth.
