What is Retrofantasma?
Admit it, you like being scared on purpose.
When the
shriek of a violin makes you jump, when dark shadows scurrying past
a flashlight’s beam take your attention from the world, when
you hear a scream at night in the distance and wonder what’s
playing on the TV at your neighbor’s house, you step---for
the briefest of moments---into the magic realm of scary movies.
Magic is inside the Carolina Theatre every month, at the horror
and sci-fi double feature, and audiences take full advantage of
getting themselves lost in that spell.
It’s the moment when the Great White rears its head from
the water in Jaws. When Jack Nicholson screams, “Here’s
Johnny!” in The Shining. It’s the sensation you feel
when you hear the theme to Halloween. It’s all the memories
of watching your favorite scary movies with good friends in a
darkened room on a cold Friday night in winter. Maybe you’re
old enough to have seen movies like The Exorcist, Poltergeist,
Friday the 13th, Ghost Story, and The Fog when they first appeared
in theatres. Chances are, you’ve only ever watched these
classics in your living room. And it’s not necessarily just
movies you’ve heard of. There’s plenty of “B”
movies that time has forgotten: The Manitou, Alligator, Visiting
Hours, and The Burning.
Simply put, Retrofantasma is a monthly double feature where some
of the greatest and most fun scary movies ever made are playing
on the big screen again. The way they were meant to be seen. In
35mm. With an audience that’s screaming and laughing and
cheering alongside you during the ride.
